This is part of the long circular route, Neos Marmaras-Parthenonas-Neos Marmaras. You leave the main road to enter a hidden dirt road that flows between romantic olive groves and Mediterranean bushes. Soon, the small forest track takes you between old goat pens and summer houses until you enter a narrow path that unfolds next to a small verdant seasonal stream. This rocky and dry stream leads you to the heart of the riverbed, where the
atmosphere is mystical.
In a while, you find yourself in front of the ruins of an old, abandoned stone watermill, hidden in the wild Mediterranean vegetation. An information sign gives you some historical information about the construction. One should not miss the opportunity to walk on the millrun and explore the other side of the mill, where you can see the impressive hydropower pool with crystal clear blue water.
You return to the front of the mill and find the trail which will finally take you to the picturesque village of Parthenonas. At this point, you start a relatively long ascent by following a clear trail section. You cross the dirt road for another time and follow this road until you find again the trail that keeps leading you uphill to the slope.
Very soon, you will find yourselves walking on a series of layers of granite rocks, eroded by the freshwater. Hike along these glossy rocks till you finally find the trail on the upper part of the slope. You need to cross the road again to follow the last trail section that will lead us to the village of Parthenonas. After approximately 1.5km you should see a sign “Kamini Tourles” and exit the forest.
The colorful and traditional houses of the village are located now on your left-hand side. From the upper part of the village where you’re now standing, admire the magnificent view to Kelifos island (Kelifos is the Greek word for turtle shell) and Toroneos Gulf. It’s worth wandering around the colourful narrow streets and finding the old school in the town
square that has a hint of being haunted.
This is a hiking route with great variety in terrain and habitats, a broad range that calms the mind and soul.
